  • D4 and D5 Is Prohibited in Cosmetics in 2020

The European Chemicals Agency announced that octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) cannot be used in any cosmetic product that needs to be rinsed after 2020.

It has been reported that D4 may be toxic to the human reproductive system in particular and may have unpredictable accumulations in the environment in the long term. D5 is also thought to have harmful effects on the environment.

Cosmetic manufacturers and responsible personnel need to follow updates, especially to ensure compliance with the EU market.

What are D4 and D5?

D4 and D5 are mainly cyclosiloxanes used as monomers for the production of silicone polymers.

D4 and D5 together with dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) are three cyclosiloxanes in commercial production and are odorless, colorless liquids and are generally used as intermediates or basic raw materials in the production of silicone rubbers, gels and resins.

In addition, it has a direct use in a range of personal care products including body lotions, hair styling aerosols, pressure sprays and sunscreen spray products.

For the European Union, by 2020, cosmetic manufacturers will need to make sure that they do not contain D4 and D5 in the raw materials they supply.
