Povidone iodine is a widely used antiseptic solution, especially in hospitals, wound care applications.
It is especially used before and during surgery.
However, there are some points to be considered due to the volatile nature of the active ingredient active iodine and in terms of its effectiveness.
Due to the volatility of the active substance, povidone iodine solutions should be kept closed and should not be prepared at high rate. In such cases, the effectiveness of the active iodine decreases, and in this case povidone iodine may be exposed to microbial contaminations.
Such solutions should not be kept open for a long time as the iodine concentration can easily change. At the points of doubt, its effectiveness should be analyzed by measuring the amount of active iodine.
It should be remembered that previously opened solutions may lose their antimicrobial properties after a certain time. It is even stated in some sources that bacterial growths are observed in such solutions.
