Possible Risks of Mineral Oil:
Mineral Oil is available in different grades. In cosmetics, it is necessary to use “cosmetic grade” Mineral Oil which is more purified than technical grade. However, some cosmetic companies do not take this into account due to costs or misleading of the supplier. This may cause mineral oil to carry pollution from production.
Mineral oils have the risk of causing acne, especially from bacteria on the skin, due to the risk of clogging the pores.
The most important reason to avoid Mineral Oils is that it is not a nutrient. It forms a layer only on the skin and prevents moisture loss. It does not contribute in any way to skin nutrition.
Mineral oils do not decompose spontaneously in nature and have many environmental disadvantages.
Alternative natural ingredients to Mineral Oil include shea butter, olive oil, jojoba oil, coconut and grape seed oils. Unlike mineral oils, these oils provide many benefits to the skin by having essential fatty acids, skin-firming nutrients and antioxidants that fight free radicals.
