Water Quality in Pools

  • Water Quality in Pools

Swimming pools closed due to pandemic were recently reopened. Microbiological and chemical analyzes of the opened swimming pools are carried out regularly.

Since the COVID-19 virus is easily affected by chlorine-based disinfectants, the amount of chlorine is now more important. The amount of chlorine should be measured regularly for the microbial quality of pool water.

Microbiological and chemical parameters in pool waters should be checked monthly.

(1) It is observed in pools where stabilizer chlorine compounds are used for disinfection of water.

(2) If “hydrogen peroxide + biguanide” is used in water disinfection, hydrogen peroxide should be in the range of 40-80. In this case, pH 8.2, ammonium 1.5 and total alkalinity up to 220 is considered appropriate. Free chlorine measurements are not made in these pools, hydrogen peroxide and biguanide are measured.

(3) It is observed in the pools where chlorine and chlorine compounds are used for disinfection of water.

(4) It is the level to be searched in pools where ozone, UV, chlorine dioxide and other disinfection systems are used for water disinfection.

NOTE: Hydrogen peroxide, biguanide and free chlorine measurements are made at the pool location.

(1) Apart from the proposed method, laboratories may use another method, provided they show their references.

(2) The frequency of analysis should be twice a month in periods of intense use of the swimming pool.
